SAN DIEGO, CA — Last night, Shana Hazan former public school teacher, nonprofit executive, and parent of an SDUSD student, placed first in the top-two primary election for the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) Board of Education District B with 52.32% of the vote, advancing to the November general election. “I want to thank every single person across our District B communities – from Kearny Mesa and Tierrasanta to Allied Gardens and Del Cerro – who took the time to perform our most sacred civic duty by voting for our campaign to build a school district where all students can thrive. I am deeply grateful for the support I have received from parents, educators, and dedicated community leaders in recent months and am humbled by our success in the primary. I look forward to my continued partnership with community stakeholders as we work together to achieve victory in November,” said Hazan of her victory. “Our message of closing the achievement gap, increasing transparency and accountability, and providing wraparound services for students who need them has resonated across District B. “On the School Board, I will always make sure our kids come first, that parent and family voices are elevated and respected, and that educators have the resources and support they need. As the only candidate in this race with a child in our schools, I have heard loud and clear from voters how important it is to have a parent on our school board who understands what our families are going through. With your help, we can make sure every student in every school can reach their full potential.” Hazan, who serves as Vice Chair of the California Children & Families Commission (First 5 California) and is the only parent with a child in SDUSD schools in her District B race, will go on to face Godwin Higa in the general election. Hazan’s campaign is endorsed by respected elected leaders across the county, including Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins, Congressman Scott Peters, former Congresswoman, Assemblywoman, and SDUSD Board Member Susan Davis, Assemblyman Chris Ward, San Diego City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera, San Diego City Councilmember Raul Campillo, San Diego City Councilmember Dr. Jen Campbell, First 5 California Chief Deputy Director Jackie Thu-Huong Wong, and former California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, as well as seven members of the City of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission. She has also been endorsed by the San Diego Union-Tribune, the San Diego Education Association, Administrators Association, San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council, the San Diego Education Association, Carpenters Local 619, the San Diego Young Democrats, San Diego County Democratic Women’s Club, the Administrators Association of San Diego City Schools, and was named a 2022 Gun Sense Candidate by Moms Demand Action. |
