Shana Hazan Launches Re-Election Campaign for San Diego Unified School Board in District

The SDUSD Trustee and California Children & Families Commission Vice Chair seeks a second term to build on measurable success since joining the Board in 2022.

SAN DIEGO, CA – San Diego Unified School Board Trustee Shana Hazan formally announced her campaign for re-election during a campaign kick-off event Saturday afternoon in the San Carlos neighborhood. Hazan, who also serves as Vice Chair of the California Children & Families Commission (First 5 California), is seeking to build on the noteworthy progress she’s already made on behalf of students, teachers, and families.

“I’m excited to announce that I’m running for re-election to ensure all kids can reach their full potential. Since I joined the Board, we’ve boosted student achievement and our graduation rate, increased full-day Transitional Kindergarten citywide to more than 5,000 four-year-olds, and provided 50% more students with free afterschool care,” said Hazan. “I’m proud that we’ve significantly increased teacher pay and rolled out middle school sports and elementary school arts instruction at every campus, but there’s still more work to do. I’m running for re-election to finish the job.”

In attendance at Saturday’s event was San Diego Councilmember Raul Campillo, School Board Vice President Richard Barrera, Grossmont Healthcare District Board Member Nadia Farjood, and former Congressmember and Board of Education member Susan Davis, as well as local children and families.

As Board President, Hazan was instrumental in implementing new metrics to improve student wellness, academic achievement, and college and career readiness by working in partnership with students, families, and educators. Under her leadership, the district has increased accountability and transparency so that every decision it makes is centered on improving outcomes for kids.

“From increasing student achievement and providing more robust athletics and enrichment opportunities to standing up for our teachers and advancing workforce housing projects, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made so far. But our work isn’t done. Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. That’s why I’ve worked so hard on our School Board and it’s why I’m running again. I’ll continue fighting for a school district where every student, in every neighborhood, has what they need to reach their full potential,” said Hazan.

Hazan’s re-election campaign has raised more than $27,000 in the first half of 2025, and has already earned the support of elected leaders across San Diego, including Congressmember Sara Jacobs, former Congressmember Susan Davis, Assemblymembers Chris Ward and Darshana Patel, City Attorney Heather Ferbert, City Councilmembers Raul Campillo, Kent Lee, Sean Elo-Rivera, and Marni von Wilpert, and San Diego Unified School Board President Cody Petterson, Vice President Richard Barrera, and Trustee Sabrina Bazzo.

In 2022, Hazan was first elected to the Board with nearly 60% of the general election vote.
